Burlington man charged with impersonating officer


BURLINGTON, N.C. (AP) - Burlington police have arrested a man they say has been posing as a law enforcement officer.

The Times-News of Burlington reports ( reports that police began an investigation three months ago into reports that a man was armed, wearing a security uniform, driving a white van and representing himself as a private security officer. The investigation showed the man approached people living near an apartment complex and asked them why they were in the area.

Investigators said the suspect also wore a duty belt with firearm and items police would carry on their belts.

Police said 59-year-old Arnold Wayne Southern was not and has not been a licensed private security officer. He's in the Alamance County jail under a $1,500 secured bond. It's not known whether he has an attorney.
