Charges dropped against reporter from NC protest

READ MORE:

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- Charges have been dropped against a Charlotte Observer reporter arrested while covering protesters at the North Carolina legislature.

Wake County District Attorney Colon Willoughby said Thursday charges were dismissed against reporter Tim Funk. Willoughby says a video of Funk's arrest showed a journalist doing his job and not taking part in the protest.

Willoughby said he believes Funk is the first of more than 930 people arrested during the weekly Moral Monday protests to have charges dropped. The DA says about a dozen other protesters have been offered dropped charges if they perform community service and pay court costs.

The 58-year-old newsman was arrested June 10 while interviewing clergy members protesting the policies of the Republican lawmakers who control the legislature. Funk faced misdemeanor trespassing and failure to disperse charges.
