WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- The Wrightsville Beach Wahine Classic surf competition is back by popular demand after a one year hiatus, and these sassy surfers say they hope it's here to stay. Ladies of all ages were fired up and ready to hit the water to ride some serious waves when we showed up, but as the day went along, the fierce competition became more about empowering female surfers than winning first place. "I think I did good, I'm just nervous,” Surfer Julia Eckel said. “I can't wait to hear about it though." Eckel has been surfing for 6 years. She says it's important for girls to have their own competition. "In most of the bigger competitions, like the Volcom ones, there's only one division for the girls, and it's all ages,” she said. Eckel says this competition is different. The all-female surf event featured over 100 ladies looking to show off their surfing skills. But the annual competition hit a rocky road last year when it's biggest sponsor pulled out, and show did not go on. "It was really a bummer for it not to be here last year,” CB Surf Shop Surfer, Misty Wilbanks said. Wilbanks says having an all-female competition is important in a sport mostly dominated by men. "Surfing is mainly a male dominated sport, so it's good to have all these girls out here competing with one another on a level that they can compare themselves on,” Wilbanks said. Co-chair of the event, and award winning surfer, Jo Pickett has been surfing for over 40 years. “In 1971, I saw my first surfboard, and I immediately went out and pushed the fellow off of it and got on,” Pickett said. “And that's how I started surfing." She says the impact the competition has on these girls is worth the effort put into bringing it back. "I love to watch these girls come into their own confidence and get comfortable in their own skin,” she said. But Pickett says she couldn't have put this event together if it wasn't for the support of this community. "It's the community that did this. I happen to be standing here, but it's the community that did it,” Pickett explained. Pickett says things are looking up for the future of this competition. She says she's taking it one day at a time, but hopes to have this event again next year.
