School board members discuss Common Core State Standards

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- New Hanover County School Board Members met Tuesday to discuss a number of issues, including a resolution regarding the implementation of the new Common Core State Standards.

The board was considering asking the state to pause implementation so they could further study the standards.

The school board chairman says while the district isn't opposed to higher standards, there needs to be more clarity.

"There are a lot of unanswered questions about the standards themselves," Chairman Don Hayes said.

In September the board will consider a resolution that would ask state leaders to analyze and clarify the standards.

North Carolina along with 40 other states adopted the Common Core in 2010.
