Clemson students hold vigil to remember fire victims

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- Clemson University students gathered on campus last night to remember the seven victims of a fatal fire at a North Carolina beach house. Nineteen-year-old Emily Yelton was the only Clemson student among the seven who died early Sunday morning at Ocean Isle Beach. The other six victims were from the University of South Carolina. Yelton was changing her major to early childhood education so she could teach kindergarten. Yelton's sorority, Delta Zeta, collected children's books to give to a school readiness program in Yelton's memory. Several speakers last night pointed out Clemson and South Carolina have been rivals for more than 100 years, but have been united by the tragedy. Clemson student government president Callie Boyd says the schools are allies in the game of life. (Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
