CFCC students make first training trip on R/V Cape Hatteras

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Cape Fear Community College's new research vessel the Cape Hatteras set sail today on its first student training voyage.

A group of 17 students and crew are on a four-day training exercise.

Students will trawl along North Carolina's coast learning about sea safety as well as collecting sea life from the ocean floor.

Students say they are looking forward to being a part of Cape Hatteras's first trip for the school.

"I'm looking forward to how the new boat rides," Alan Wescott said. "I am so used to how the dan moore rides, and it will just give me experience on different boats and how different ones work, and I am not used to just one boat."

All students will eventually get the chance to pilot the ship and navigate under the supervision the captain.
