Ex-CIA director Petraeus speaks at Duke

READ MORE:

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Former CIA director and retired Army Gen. David Petraeus says it's worth a try for President Barack Obama to find a diplomatic solution for the showdown with Syria over chemical weapons, even with Russia taking the lead on setting in place the potential negotiation.

Petraeus spoke Wednesday evening in a question-and-answer session at Duke University in Durham.

Petraeus said he's still skeptical about putting together a plan that would put Syria's chemical weapons under international control for their subsequent dismantling. But Petraeus told the crowd that the Russian offer gave the Obama administration a lifeline of sorts after congressional support for military action was diminishing.

The former four-star general led U.S. military efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan and later the Central Intelligence Agency.
