WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Family and friends laced up there shoes at Laney High School this weekend for the Jassmine T. Raynor Memorial Foundation 5K walk and run.

Raynor passed away at age 19 from sickle cell disease two years ago. She graduated from Laney High School and was just starting her freshman year of college.

Raynor’s family wants to keep her memory alive and also wants to raise awareness.

"She was a lovely child," said Raynor's mother Chawana Moore. "Everybody out here knew her. She was outspoken. She always welcomed everybody with a smile. She never met a stranger. She made everyone feel warm and welcome when they came around her."

Sickle cell disease is a blood disorder that mutates red blood cells in a person’s body. Raynor’s family hopes fundraisers like these will eventually lead to a cure.
