DURHAM, NC (AP) -- Police at North Carolina Central University in Durham say a gunman has been shot and killed near the southeast part of the campus. Durham police had tracked a suspect thought to be armed onto the campus late Monday, prompting officials to lock down the school about 10:15 p.m. Police say the man was found in some woods shortly before midnight. Campus Police Chief Tim Bellamy said the man challenged officers with a gun and they fired. The man's name has not been released. Police say the gunman was not a student. The lockdown was lifted shortly after 1 a.m. The State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case. Classes in the School of Education are being relocated Tuesday. A school spokeswoman did not immediately respond to messages early Tuesday. (Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
