Thieves steal $65,000 worth of Venus flytraps, pitcher plants

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Investigators say thieves made off with thousands of dollars worth of rare, meat-eating plants from a Brunswick County business.

Brunswick County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Emily Flax says the approximately 10,000 Venus flytraps and pitcher plants, another carnivorous species, stolen from the Fly Trap Farm on Civietown Road in Supply are worth about $65,000.

The crooks also stole tools and household goods.

Earlier this year someone stole more than 1,000 Venus flytraps from Wilmington's Alderman Park.

The rare and protected plants are native to an area of about 60 miles around Wilmington.
