Teacher of the Week: Kelly Feamster

WINNABOW, NC (WWAY) -- Several Brunswick County parents took the time to nominate one teacher for her exceptional work...with exceptional children. Mrs. Kelly Feamster works with kids with special needs, particularly children with autism.

She was shocked when GMC anchor Ashley Jacobs showed up in her classroom alongside a WWAY photographer. But after the initial surprise wore off, she was honest about her feelings, "Embarrassed, nervous, shocked," she said.

Kelly Feamster works with special needs children at Town Creek Elementary varying in ages...from kindergarten to fifth grade. That comes with a challenge - each child is unique. Some don't even speak...but Kelly finds a solution.

She said, "Figure out their language. A lot of them are non-verbal, but they'll grab or they'll clap or they'll do different eye movements, gazes so you just have to look at how they're communicating with you and from there figure out what they like, when they figure out what they like, that's what they'll work for."

WWAY can give her a $400 gift card, thanks to sponsors McDonald's, Scarless Vein Care, Corning Credit Union and Teacher's Aid..

She plans to buy more supplies for her classroom and said, no matter how challenging each day can be, she looks at her students like her own family, "Regardless if we're sick or tired, these are our babies during the day - we take care of them like they're our own."

She has one goal in mind when she educated the students she loves so much, "I want them to be out in the general population."
