WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Early this morning Wilmington lost a woman who helped shape the community we live in today.

Betty Cameron died of natural causes at the age of 92. Family say they were with Mrs. Cameron when she passed this morning.

Cameron hosted racial dialogs at the YWCA in 1967 and 1968. The organization even awarded her with the first ever lifetime achievement award in 1994.

In 2007 her family donated more than $2 million to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for its Women's and Children's Hospital. It was named after her a year later.

"The generosity she has shown to New Hanover Regional Medical Center and this community will continue to impact so many lives for generations to come," NHRMC CEO Jack Barto said in a statement. "Her legacy continues through the thousands of families cared for at the Betty H. Cameron Women's & Children's Hospital."

The Cameron family also donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to UNCW to the Cameron School of Business.

Cameron's funeral is Thursday at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church. The family says the public is welcome.
