Ocean Isle residents mourn fire victims

READ MORE: Ocean Isle residents mourn fire victims
It was a full house at Ocean Isle Beach Chapel Sunday morning. More people than usual came to services to mourn the seven college students who lost their lives in last week's fire. "We're just all hurting and you know, for any parent this is important," said Cindy Malam, an Ocean Isle Beach resident who lives blocks away from the house that burned down. Members of the congregation fought back tears as they commemorated victims in the opening prayers. Fire fighters who were on the scene lit a candle for each student. Flags from their alma matters Clemson and South Carolina Universities stood in front of the pulpit. No family members attended. Between Thursday and Saturday six of the seven victims had funerals in South Carolina. Those who went to Ocean Isle Beach Sunday morning expressed both their condolences and support for victims' families. "When other folks are experiencing difficult times, we come together. It makes those difficult times more bearable," said one man who drove down from Wilmington to attend the service. "We shoulder the burdens together," he added. Residents of Ocean Isle Beach set up a memorial in front of the house that caught fire. It has seven small crosses to commemorate the seven young lives that were lost. Sunday's memorial service lasted about an hour and a half. The last of the funerals will be Monday in North Charleston for 18-year-old Cassidy Pendelton.
