Tragic loss. But this opportunity to remind pedestrians how to walk safely can be useful. Walking is properly done ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE FACING TRAFFIC! There is a good reason for this. Pedestrians do not automatically have the right of way, but even if they do, the vehicle always wins the encounter. Regardless of right of way, the pedestrian should take responsibility for watching traffic and being prepared to move out of harm's way. I am amazed at the number of pedestrians strolling along the right side of a road, back to traffic, and they never even turn a glance at the cars coming behind them. Somebody needs to teach our children these fundamental safety lessons or it will keep happening. Our roads are not designed to stand in, walk on, or bicycle along. Sometimes we need to do it, but stay alert.
