NORTH TOPSAIL, NC (WWAY) – Penny Wolff is a basketball fan, but she’s not letting a team rivalry stand between her and students.
Though a Tar Heel fan at heart, she bonds with her students over the "Wolff" Pack. The clever play on her last name helps get kids excited about homework. She sends them home with a Wolff Pack of assignments each night. But the theme carries over into classroom responsibility as well.
"I have a greeter," she laughed. "And hopefully when you walk into the room they’ll say, 'Welcome to the Wolff Pack!'"
Wolff's laughter is contagious. She keeps kids smiling and learning by keeping the energy level high. She truly believes if kids are having fun while they learn, the lessons will stay with them longer.
Teaching is an exciting ride for Wolff. She made several stops before landing in the fourth grade, including kindergarten. And she has been no stranger to awards along the way. Her classroom wall is decorated with recognitions and awards. But the Teacher of the Week award stands out. Thanks to WWAY sponsors, including Teacher's Aid, Corning Credit Union, Scarless Vein Care and McDonald's, Wollf got a $400 gift card to Teacher's Aid.
The kids won, too. Each got a certificate good for a free Happy Meal from McDonald's.
Wolff is in good company at North Topsail Elementary. Her principal, Peter Wildeboer, was recently named Pender County Principal of the Year for 2013-2014.
