WROCLAW, POLAND (WWAY) -- Topsail High School graduate James Tatum placed 5th at the World Weightlifting Championships by successfully completing a 138kg (303.6 lbs) 'Snatch' lift and a 166kg (365.2 lbs) 'Clean & Jerk' lift.

Tatum has been doing Olympic style weightlifting for 3 years and has been a member of Team Muscle Driver USA (based in Charlotte, NC) for more than a year.

He was on the wrestling team at Topsail High School and graduated in June 2007. He then went on to UNCW and graduated in 2012 with a degree in Exercise Science.

Tatum won gold at the American Open, silver at the Arnold Classic, gold at Collegiate Nationals and silver at US Nationals. That earned him a place on Team USA at the Pan American Championships in Venezuela where he placed 5th in his weight-class, which is 77kg (169.4 lbs).

This is his first year in international competition.
