Democrat Cannon elected mayor of Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Charlotte's newly elected mayor says he's looking forward to tackling the tough issues facing North Carolina's largest city.

Democrat Patrick Cannon was elected mayor Tuesday, defeating Republican challenger Edwin Peacock.

During the campaign, both Cannon and Peacock touted plans to create new jobs in a city that has become one of the nation's leading banking and energy centers.

Cannon said Wednesday that reducing Charlotte's unemployment rate is critical.

One way to do it: turning Charlotte into a global distribution hub. Cannon says an intermodal freight distribution network being built near Charlotte Douglas International Airport will link planes, rail, and East Coast ports, and will create blue-collar and white-collar jobs.

He also says he will work with state lawmakers to resolve critical differences and issues facing the area.
