NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- More than three months after two men were found stabbed to death on North Topsail Beach, newly released warrants and affidavits are shedding light on what investigators think happened.
Investigators initially said Robert Shellhammer IV and Chris Stewart killed each other on the beach July 25. The story took a turn, though, two months later, when one man's wife was charged with murder.
According to a probable cause affidavit Bekka Shellhammer told investigators that on the night of July 25 she and her husband Robert were going for a romantic stroll along North Topsail Beach when a stranger attacked them and stabbed her husband to death. But Onslow County detectives soon found out that Stewart was no stranger, and that Bekka may have killed Stewart.
Investigators say cell phone records show all three knew each other and that Bekka tried to cover it up. When law enforcement tried to search her phone for information they quickly noticed all of her text and Facebook messages had been deleted. Once detectives got Stewart's phone records, they found out why. The number that showed up most frequently, as well as being the last number he spoke with before his death, was Bekka Shellhammer's.
Search warrants also turned up two pair of zip ties, numerous rubber gloves and five knives from Shellhammer's vehicle the night of the murder. In addition, both Bekka and Robert had recordings and photos of Stewart's vehicle and home taken just days before the men died.
In another twist, the Onslow County Sheriff's office also admitted that both men were confidential informants.
Bekka Shellhammer is in the Onslow County Jail under $1 million bond for the murder of Stewart.
