New Sea Turtle Hospital up and running

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) -- Sick and injured sea turtles now have a new and improved hospital in Surf City.

The new Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital offers more space, an updated filtration system and other amenities the old facility on topsail island did not have room for.

Fifteen turtles have been moved into the new hospital. Others will be brought over as soon as possible.

"This facility is going to become something everybody is going to want to visit and see, and that's one of the things we want to happen, because then we have a chance to educate visitors about the oceans, about other marine life animals, as well as the sea turtles and what we need to do to protect our environment," hospital founder and executive director Jean Beasley said.

The hospital takes in sea turtles that have been hurt by boats or are suffering from cold shock or fungal infections.
