Rap and hip-hop culture does nothing to elevate African American communities, instead rap is only exacerbating black communities' long-standing crises: poverty, crime, and illiteracy.
Hard-edged rap-- preaching bone-deep dislike of authority—provides young black males with a continuing soundtrack to accompany their antisocial behavior, their gun-totin' thug behavior.
So completely is rap ingrained in their consciousness that their incomprehensible language is laced with references and allusions to rap lyrics and artists. They cannot talk without using the language of rap.
The violent, thug culture of rap has consumed them.
Like the writer above, I say, "The culture of rap is a significant cause of gang violence is downtown Wilmington."
Leaders must face this disagreeable fact.
