New roof rescues Wilmington woman's hopes in time for the holidays

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Giving thanks is a big part of the holiday season, especially on Thanksgiving Day, and one longtime Wilmington resident spent this one with no fear of a rain storm.

Just in time for the holiday, we take you to the new and improved home where we found Florence Warren, our Roof Rescue Contest winner, who says she is exceptionally thankful this year.

Warren says her hopes for winning were lost.

"I think it was 3 o'clock, and no one came," she said. "At 3:15, no one. 3:20, no one. I said, 'OK. I didn't win,'" Warren said.

But in fact, she did win. At 3:45, someone would push her doorbell to shed some new light.

"I was so elated, I saw George Elliott, Chris..." Warren said after finding out she won a new roof for her house in the 2013 Roof Rescue Contest, courtesy of Flores and Foley Roofing, Gaf Materials and WWAY NewsChannel 3.

"This part was truly truly damaged right here," she said.

But not anymore. Peter Foley and his crew are now finished giving their thanks, serving up a perfecting Thanksgiving week finish.

"That was truly a coincidence as far as timing goes," Foley said. "But for us, to give a special field to the community, to give back to a girl who has given 40 years in the education program, it feels good."

Community volunteers looked at more than 100 nominees to select the 2013 Roof Rescue winner. That winner couldn't be more appreciative.

"Everyday is a day of thanks giving," Warren explained. "But on Thanksgiving, being that it is this week, I thank him, my God for this. But I also thank the company and TV station, TV 3, for even entertaining the idea."

Florence is the first recipient, but she won't be the last. Peter Foley told us they plan on making this a yearly event to give back to the community.
