NC water use drops 30 percent; still short of governor's goal

READ MORE:
RALEIGH (AP) -- Water use in the state's 25 largest systems dropped by nearly 30 percent between August and the end of October. But that's still short of Gov. Mike Easley's goal to cut statewide water use in half. Easley asked North Carolina residents two weeks ago to try to cut their water use by as much as 50 percent by Halloween. He says he recognizes the goal as a lofty one but that North Carolinians must continue to cut water use. The governor is also asking each of the state's public water systems to increase reporting to the state by recording the amount of water used daily. Easley wants that information sent to his office weekly. He says the water utilities that responded represent nearly three-quarters of the state's almost 7 million customers served by public water systems. (Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press.
