Brigade Boys & Girls Club wins $50,000 contest

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Wilmington's Brigade Boys & Girls Club has won a $50,000 grant as part of a national contest.

The club, which serves more than 1,300 kids in New Hanover and Pender counties, is the winner of the the first-ever Lincoln's Legacy Award from Lincoln Financial. The award recognizes and invests in nonprofit organizations whose principles and programs advance Abraham Lincoln’s legacy of freedom and opportunity through education.

The Brigade was up against nine other non-profits, mostly from large metro-areas such as Chicago, Houston, Boston, Sacramento and Washington, DC, in an online vote that ended earlier this week. The Brigade's project is to support Project Learn, its after-school homework program.

The organization will celebrate its victory Tuesday afternoon.
