Moravian Church celebrates culture and Christmas

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Candle tea may sound like an odd drink, but it’s actually the name given to an open house offered through the Covenant Moravian Church in Wilmington.

The church welcomes the community in celebrating the story of Christmas with music, specialty cookies, and handcrafted beeswax candles. Volunteers even dress in costumes historically similar to what Moravian people wore.

"It is a costume from the 1700 period that the Moravians wore," said Candle Tea Chairman Patricia Staton. "They wore very similar outfits and very simple. They either wore white or gray. We went a little bit out on the limb with the blue."

Moravian is one of many branches of Christianity. The church says Christmas is an important date to remember and celebrate.
