Millions to BEMC for energy efficiency program

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- More jobs could be heading to our area thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The money will be used to create nine jobs and will help save energy costs in homes and businesses.

Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-7th District) was in Brunswick County Monday to present a check for $2 million dollars to the Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation.

The grant is from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Program and will provide capital for their Weatherization Program.

Brunswick Electric says the grant will allow them to offer more low-interest loans for co-op members through its innovative energy-efficiency program.

"We have so many interested members and it is necessary to go outside the co-op for funds, so this has been a resource for us that is very valuable," said Judy Gore, Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation.

Gore says the program will help home and business owners make energy-efficient improvements to their houses and companies.

Brunswick Electric is the second largest electric cooperative in North Carolina.
