CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Hikers enjoyed the third annual First Day Hike at North Carolina State Park, including Carolina Beach State Park.
The State Parks system encourages people to hike their way into 2014. More than 40 hikes took place across the state today, ranging from short walks called, "leg-stretchers" to four-mile hikes.
Carolina Beach State Park rangers say this event is a great way to expose people to the great outdoors.
"You get the chance to come out to the park and walk with the ranger that is here all the time and knows it like the back of their hand," Ranger Kip Futch said. "It's real informal. You have good conversation, talk about nature, talk about history. We just talk about whatever as we walk."
More than 50 people took part in the two-mile First Day Hike at Carolina Beach State Park.
