WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Wilmington City Council took time out of Tuesday night’s meeting to recognize three of Wilmington’s finest.
Officer Vincent Vaccaro, Officer Sam Thompson, and Officer Paul McDermott were all given medals for saving lives while in the line of duty.
Police Chief Ralph Evangelous says that the three officers who were honored exemplified what it means to protect and serve the community
“These officers saved two lives out there and I’m proud of them because they did a great job,” said Chief Ralph Evangelous. “They do this every day and this is what our folks do. I'm just really beaming with pride because they're an example of great police officers doing a great job."
The Wilmington City Council also passed an ordinance to keep WPD officers safe while on patrol.
Council unanimously approved close to $28,000 in funding to purchase up to 40 new bullet proof vests.
According to Chief Ralph Evangelous all bulletproof vests need to be replaced every 5 years due to basic wear and tear.
