CFPUA cuts budget as water use declines

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority today amended its operating budget to cut $1.2 million. The move comes after the authority reported a significant decline in water consumption, which also means lower revenues.

A CFPUA spokesman says today's move is a formal adoption of actions CFPUA staff because last fall when they proposed budget cuts after seeing initial signs of reduced demand. CFPUA says usage continued to decline or leveled off during the first six months of the fiscal year, which led to today's budget amendment.

CFPUA says several factors have contributed to declines in water use. They include consumer conservation, greater use of low-flow devices, reaction to pricing changes and weather, including a wet summer.
