Marching bands battle to celebrate MLK Day

READ MORE:

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- It was the Port City's first ever band battle with a head to head match up at the 2014 Historically Black College or University Experience.

Fans filled the bleachers, cheerleaders pepped up the crowds, and the battle royal began at the sold out HBCU experience in the Williston Middle School gym.

Elizabeth City State University "Sound of Class" and Saint Augustine's University "Superior Sound" marching bands battled it out to remember Dr. King's legacy.

But battling bands was not the only focus. Students also got a chance to talk with college admissions counselors about their futures.

"It's very important for everybody to come see these colleges, and just see something different that they haven't seen before,” Ashley High School student Tyshoan White said.

"We wanted to give the kids, a lot of African-American kids, like 'Hey, you also can go to college. You can do this.' Especially if I can do it, they can do it,” volunteer and HBCU alumni Roderick Bell said.

Organizers hope this event will inspire the youth of Wilmington, and show them that they can do anything they set their minds to

Don't forget tomorrow is the Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade in downtown Wilmington from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Our very own anchors Brandon Taylor, Makenzi Henderson, and Daniel Seamans will be a part of the parade.
