Get your salty car cleaned now or risk serious damage

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- If your car has been anywhere in the past week, it's gotten a little salty.

Now that the snow has passed, it's time to get that salt off. Folks all over town headed to the car wash this weekend.

One customer said it best, "you just want them to last and look as nice as possible."

While the salt and sand keeps everyone safe on the road, it can be down right dangerous for your car.

Cruiser's Car Wash manager, Lena miles says, "Salt is corrosive, it can rust the under-body of your car. it's horrible for the paint and it just looks horrible too."

Customer Jonathan Jessup said, "gotta get that salt off so it doesn't rust.'

Another customer stated, "I don't like my car to be dirty and i know that salt is corrosive and it's not good for your vehicles"

There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to winter car care, starting with getting your car washed as soon as possible.

Miles says, "The longer it sits, the worse it gets. Definitely waxing your car every six months(is best), because it will fly all over the top."

Using a high pressured hose on an under-body flush helps focus on those major problem areas, fully ensuring the salt washes away.

WWAY's storm team coverage had us out and about on the ice.. After a quick trip through the tunnel... our car got a thorough wipe down. Hopefully the only salt we'll have to wash off for a while will come from the ocean.
