RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- North Carolina U.S. Senate hopeful Greg Brannon has officially filed his paperwork to enter the race for the Republican nomination.

The Cary obstetrician put his name on the ballot while visiting the State Board of Elections on Wednesday afternoon. He's now the fourth GOP candidate that's filed for the job. At least two others are expected before filing ends Feb. 28. Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan also hasn't yet filed.

Brannon is a favorite of tea party members and counts Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul among his endorsements.

The official filing comes a day after a civil court jury in Wake County determined Brannon made false or misleading statements to investors in a technology startup company, meaning he must pay them more than $250,000. Brannon says he'll appeal.
