Small earthquake rattles some near Summerville, SC

READ MORE:

CHARLESTON, SC (AP) -- A small earthquake has shaken houses and rattled some residents in the Summerville area.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports it hit shortly after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The US Geological Survey initially reported the tremor at 2.4 on the Richter scale, then upgraded it to 2.5. By Wednesday night it was being reported as 3.0.

A 3.0 magnitude quake is noticeable, but not strong enough to cause significant damage, according to Erin Beutel, an earthquake expert at the College of Charleston. She told the newspaper it is not all that unusual in the Summerville area.

Beutel said three tremors that measured at least 3.0 have rumbled under Summerville since 2004. The strongest one measured 3.6 in 2008.
