NC State baseball team cools off UNCW

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -- Trea Turner homered and knocked in five runs as nationally-ranked NC State ran past UNCW, 11-2, on Wednesday at Brooks Field.

The Wolfpack improved to 15-8 with the non-conference road win and halted a six-game losing streak. The Seahawks fell below the .500 mark with the loss and stand at 11-12 entering this weekend’s Colonial Athletic Association opening series at James Madison.

Turner, who homered in the first inning, was lone Wolfpack to have two hits on the night. Kyle Cavanaugh and Preston Palmiero each added a hit and two runs batted in.

UNCW was held to five hits on the game while Terence Connelly and Luke Dunlap had RBI hits.

Logan Jernigan (4-2) earned the win, striking out three over 2.1 innings.

UNCW freshman starter Cory Gantz (0-1) took the loss for UNCW, allowing three runs on four hits and a pair of walks in 3.2 innings.

How it happened: Leading 2-1 in the top of the third, Gantz appeared to end the inning with a ground ball to shortstop, but a balk was called and Turner advanced to second. Logan Ratledge followed with a two-out RBI single to make it 3-1. NCSU added four in the sixth and two more in the 7th to take a 9-2 lead. All six of those runs came with two out.

Inside the box score: NCSU finished the night with eight two-out RBI’s … UNCW went 1-for-11 in RBI situations while NCSU was 4-for-10 … UNCW pitchers combined to walk eight hitters and hit two more … Seven those reaching pass on a walk or hit batter came around to score for NC State … The Wolfpack went 7-for-16 with two outs.

Notes: UNCW used eight pitchers on the evening … The Seahawks fell to 2-5 when committing three or more errors.

Next up: The Seahawks open conference play this Friday with a 6:30 p.m. start at James Madison and continue the series on Saturday, also at 6:30 p.m., and conclude the series on Sunday with first-pitch slated for 2 p.m.
