Santa Claus may have some competition from area bikers this year. This morning more than seventy five bikers carried enough donated toys for 200 needy children from Castle Hayne to Hampstead. The effort was part of the 20th annual Roger Hendrix Memorial Toy run. A biker and Vietnam veteran, Roger Hendrix started the tradition in 1988. After he died in 1993, his wife Peggy has carried it on in his memory. Peggy said it was important to her husband that all kids have a Merry Christmas. "I'm just really, really happy when we all get together to do this," Peggy Hendrix said. "I have a feeling he's up there watching over all of us and he just would've been really happy to be a part of this and I'm glad for what he started here." The riders dropped the toys off at American Legion post 167 in Hampstead. They then headed back to Wilmington for a highly anticipated barbecue.
