Neighbors come together to help families who lost their homes in Leland fire

LELAND, NC (WWAY) -- Two families are picking up the pieces after losing their homes in a fire yesterday afternoon. Now a community is coming together.

Investigators say the fire started when ashes from a burn pit were improperly disposed.

Volunteers are collecting donations for each family, as well as monetary donations in order to get these families back on their feet.

Windsor Park resident, Deana Marr, says she did not know either family before the incident but wanted to do something to help them.

"These folks are just reaching out to people that they don't know, and that are complete strangers. Anytime there is a need there's always a bunch of people here ready to step up it is amazing to be in Windsor Park,” Marr said.

Donations are being accepted at the Windsor Park clubhouse until Thursday.
