WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Wilmington Fire Department held its annual job-related physical assessments today, which puts firefighters through a series of physical tests.
They perform on-the-job routine tasks like moving ladders, carrying hoses and dragging a 165-pound dummy.
Training chief Patrick Campbell says the assessment helps the department in more ways than one.
"We just validate that we can do the task, but this job-related physical assessment also ties in with our wellness incentive that we have going on within our department," he said. "We're trying to be a healthier, more physically fit and abled department as a whole."
If firefighters do not pass the assessment, they go through a physical training program then allowed to try again.
