Grease used as weapon in crime

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)-- Domestic violence knows no bounds when it comes to its victims, according to District Attorney Ben David saying justice was served in a Pender County court room today.

In January of this year, Vernon Lee woke up to the pain of boiling grease being poured onto him by his girlfriend Lisa Wells.

“Because of the skill of surgeons more than the mercy of this defendant Mr. Lee is alive today,” said David.

Lee showed us the scars outside the courtroom and stated “[the grease] had cooked me before I could even jump.”

He thinks that he is lucky to be alive, crediting the “man upstairs” for saving him because he is a good person.

The DA’s office states that Lee and Wells were arguing after a night of drinking when Lee went to bed. Wells entered the bedroom and poured a pot of boiling grease onto his sleeping body.

No cameras were allowed in the courtroom when Wells entered a guilty plea.

Her daughter, although having to move out because she couldn’t handle the violence, does not agree that her mother should have entered the plea.

She states, “I think that she is a good, caring woman.” Lee’s family thinks that self-defense should have been considered in this case.

“This just shows you that domestic violence is not confined to any one sex,” said David. “It can happen to a man just as easily as a woman. Which when you see it you have to report it but certainly there is no excuse for an assault like this.”
