Under NC law, the signs are considered the property of the campaign and people are subject to misdemeanor vandalism charges if they damage or remove the signs.
The NCDOT has limitations on the placement of signs and size of signs. The municipalities may have stricter laws regarding dates, but NC allows for signs to be placed in the right of way 30 days before the election and they are to be removed within 7 days after the election. NCDOT says that they will not remove any signs from the right of way as long as they are lawfully placed.
