Duke Energy funds CFCC's welding program

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A check for nearly $150,000 was presented to Cape Fear Community College today.

They're funding a new welding training program for the Pender County campus.

The money will be used to set up a new lab and also cover equipment and materials.

Duke Energy Progress is partnering with CFCC and other community colleges in the state as part of a $6.7M grant.

President Ted Spring says the program on the north campus is full and welding jobs are in high demand.

"These skills have been put to work almost immediately," Spring said. "So employers, once they know we have this kind of training program, they'll be in here looking and talking with these students right away. Some of these students will get jobs before they finish the program."

Spring says after students go through the two year program they will make around $15-$25 an hour right away.
