The New Hanover County Board of Elections officially announced Monday its investigation into a series of "irregular" election-related recorded telephone calls.

The board unanimously adopted a statement, written by board Chairman John Ferrante, outlining the board's role in this matter. Ferrante said the board is responsible for determining the origin of the calls, the person responsible for them, and whether state election laws were violated.

The calls in question were sent out last Monday night and Tuesday morning and contained a male voice claiming to be Commissioner Brian Berger asking voters to support Woody White in his bid for the 7th district congressional seat and Michael Lee for a state senate seat. Caller identification on these calls listed both Berger's cell phone number and the number for the county clerk's office.
