Surfers save swimmer at Wrightsville Beach

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Scary and lucky moments for a swimmer in Wrightsville beach Wednesday.

As the summer season kicks off, many people are heading to the beach for sun, sand, and swimming. But, it's important to remember the dangers of rip currents as you splash in the waves.

Charles Crews, who was swimming at Wrightsville Beach, said he learned just how strong rip currents can be and what it feels like to be caught in one.

"It was pushing me outward, away from the wall basically, and it was coming downward onto me and pushing me under. As I was swimming, I was trying to stay afloat. And, whenever I would try to get close to the wall, it would crash onto me and pull me down under," Crews said.

Luckily for Crews, some nearby surfers rescued him. But, he said this serves as a reminder to be cautious while in the water, especially when lifeguards are not on duty.
