Students get off bus before it catches fire

RICHLANDS, NC (AP) -- Onslow County school officials say a charter bus carrying students home from a music competition has caught fire.

Authorities say no one was hurt in the blaze on U.S. Highway 258 near Richlands, but students lost a number of their band instruments and other belongings.

Officials say the band, chorus and orchestra students from New Bridge Middle School were heading home early Sunday from a competition at Busch Gardens in Virginia when the driver noticed a problem with the bus.

Authorities say everyone got off the bus before the rear engine caught fire, and the blaze spread.
