Topsail needs one win; Whiteville needs two for a state title + two locals selected in MLB Draft

ZEBULON, NC (NCHSAA) -- A two-run single in the sixth inning by Clark Cota broke a 3-3 tie and lifted Hampstead Topsail to a 5-3 triumph over Monroe Piedmont on Friday night in the first game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A baseball championship series at Five County Stadium.

Cota, who pitched four innings, and Jake Madole had two hits apiece for Topsail, while Danny Wilson hit safely three times, including a pair of doubles.

Topsail took a 3-0 lead in the third, with key hits a two-run single by Sam Luchansky and an RBI-single by Madole. But Piedmont battled back to tie the game in the fifth on an RBI single by Hunter Jones that scored Colton Greene.

Luchansky was the winning pitcher with Trent Hansley, an East Carolina signee, coming on to get the save in the seventh, striking out the side. David Nash got the loss.

Topsail, making its third appearance in the last seven years in the NCHSAA championships, improved its record to 20-8 while Piedmont slipped to 21-9. Hunter Jones was two for four at the plate for the Panthers.

Game two of the best-of-three is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. This is the 98th year for baseball championships in the NCHSAA. The Raleigh Sports Consortium and Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau serve as host city sponsors for the championship.

ZEBULON, NC (NCHSAA) -- Logan Sheets and Weston Payne each had run-scoring singles in a four-run sixth to help lead East Surry to a 7-4 win over Whiteville on Friday in the opening game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A baseball championship series at Five County Stadium.

East Surry led 3-1 entering the sixth before Whiteville plated a pair to tie the game. But the Cards then exploded for four runs to take command and run their winning streak to 31.

Cody Ashburn led the way for the Cards with a perfect three singles in three trips while Seth Brim and Scott Meredith had two hits apiece. East Surry is now 31-0, while Whiteville is 24-6 and had a 13-game win streak of its own snapped.

Tyler Marion got the win for East Surry, posting his 13th win against no losses. He struck out eight, walked three and scattered six hits in six innings of work. Zach Pait was the losing pitcher and also led the Wolfpack at the plate with two hits, including a home run.

Game two of the best-of-three is set for Saturday morning at 11 o'clock. This is the 98th year for baseball championships in the NCHSAA. The Raleigh Sports Consortium and Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau serve as host city sponsors for the championship.

RALEIGH, NC (NCHSAA) -- Sabrina Dodson hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to help lift North Stokes to a 3-0 shutout of Whiteville on Friday night in the first game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A softball championship series at Walnut Creek Softball Complex.

Dodson's two-run shot and a run-scoring single by Ashley Smith in the fifth broke a scoreless tie and the pitching of senior Lindsay Brown kept Whiteville at bay. She went the distance, striking out four and allowing only two hits. Sophomore Malerie Leviner was the losing pitcher.

Freshman Sage McLelland, who entered the game batting .531, had two hits in three trips for Whiteville, now 25-7. North Stokes improved to 27-3. Both teams are seeking their first NCHSAA state softball championship.

Game two in the best of three series is set for Saturday at 11 am, with a third game if necessary Saturday afternoon. The Raleigh Sports Consortium and Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau serve as host city sponsors for the championship.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -- UNCW senior lefthanded pitcher Kelly Secrest was selected in the 10th round of the Major League Baseball draft on Friday.

Secrest, who was picked with the 295th overall pick, becomes the 36th Seahawk during Head Coach Mark Scalf's tenure to be drafted.

As a senior, Secrest set a school and Colonial Athletic Association career record with 114 appearances over his four years with the program. Secrest recorded a team-leading eight saves this season to move into second on UNCW's all-time list with 17 career saves. The hard-throwing lefthander also recorded a 5-2 record and posted a 1.73 earned run average. Opponents hit a meager .218 and managed just two extra base hits.

Secrest is the first Seahawk to be selected by the Mets since Bradley Holt was a first round supplemental pick of the organization in 2008. Jason Roach, another pitcher for the Seahawks, was taken by the Mets with the 20th round of the 1997 draft and made his MLB debut for the organization during the 2003 season.

SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) -- West Brunswick High graduate Jay Gause was selected in the 10th round of the Major League Baseball draft on Friday by the Houston Astros. Gause, a pitcher, played college baseball at Faulkner University.

ASHEBORO, NC (WWAY) -- In the Coastal Plain League on Friday Asheboro beat Wilmington 6-2. The Wilmington Sharks are now 3-6 this season.
