CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) -- Most of the new charter schools approved in North Carolina are not ready to open.

The Charlotte Observer reported that 19 of the 25 charter schools approved for opening this year still have to show state officials that they have enough students, classrooms and plans in place to open in August.

A state advisory panel is getting a report on the schools Monday. The schools had to file reports by the end of May on whether they were ready.

By the end of May, new schools were supposed to have 75 percent of their projected enrollment, 75 percent of their faculty identified for hiring and have a suitable facility that can be occupied at least two weeks before opening day. Detailed academic and financial plans also are required.
