WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)-- She thought it was a simple Facebook message from a friend but it would turn out to be something far more sinister.
It was a proposal from a hit man offering to save a Wilmington woman’s life but for a price.
Janet Benton contacted us about a possible scam this afternoon and told us it was one that left her fearing for her life.
She says it started on Facebook and turned into text messages.
A man said he was hired to kill her by her best friend. Saying the only way to save her own life was to pay this mysterious person $1,500.
She said she wasn't sure what to make of it all but instantly got frightened and contacted police.
They have assured Benton that it was all a scam, given the grammatical issues in the text messages alone.
The question still lingers for her though, what if it’s not?
“I am still nervous,” Benton said, “my children are very upset, very upset, they're like mom maybe you need a gun. Maybe we need to go get you a gun. I'm like, you know, I think this is a scam.”
Benton says she wanted to make other people aware of the scam.
She told us the whole thing had her so frightened, she decided to spend the night with a friend.
