WILMINGTON -- There are some safety tips to remember, while you're thinking about all the family and friends to buy for this holiday season. Shopping areas can be prime targets for criminals and con-artists with so many people around carrying lots of money and gifts. Shopping for the holidays can sometimes be stressful...but it's also fun. In order to keep both you and your purchases safe, there are some things to remember.. Shopping and crowds can be distracting. Thinking about all the people to buy for can take your mind off of your surroundings. But it's important to stay alert and steer clear of being an easy target for thieves. Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you have to shop outside in the dark, bring a friend or family member. Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps. Don't bring purchases out to the car in between shopping trips in and out of stores. If you have to, make sure to cover them up from plain view. Also avoid carrying large amounts of cash, if you must make sure to keep it in your front pocket.
