FBI: Kidnap victim rescued with help of area agencies in elaborate international plot

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Federal agents say they rescued a South Carolina man in North Carolina with the help of several area agencies six days after the man was kidnapped as part of an international plot.

The FBI said in a statement that the man was found around 5 a.m. Tuesday in a home in Cumberland County after they say the investigation quickly escalated into a large-scale international effort. An FBI spokesman says both Bladen County deputies and emergency service authorities assisted in the investigation, along with dozens of other agencies across the country.

FBI agents say this comes after the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office contacted the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, followed by the FBI in early July about a missing person’s case. The FBI says the man was first kidnapped in St. Matthews, SC, before being transported across the NC state line by a group of people.

Agents say demands were sent to the victim's family within hours of the man's disappearance and continued over a period of several days, according to a release. The FBI released few details about the plot, in a statement saying only that the elaborate plot has ties overseas. The FBI said three people have been arrested, and that more arrests are likely.
