Response to crash leads officers to shooting


ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WWAY) -- Elizabethtown Police say as they responded to one crime this weekend, they wound up finding another.

Police say around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, they found a man lying in the middle of Quail Street. The driver of a stopped car said she did not see the man and hit him.

Police found marijuana in the car, and arrested Letrice Brooks for DWI and possesion among other charges.

The victim was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center and since released.

While responding to the hit pedestrian, officers heard gunshots.

They found spent shells at Della and James streets and learned there was an argument between people in a yard and other on the sidewalk. Shots were fired from the street.

Officers arrested Marcus Smith for attempted first-degree murder.

The condition of the victim is unknown.
