RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) -- A third candidate appears to have met qualifications for an official write-in candidate for North Carolina's US Senate seat in November, the Associated Press reports.

Former Indian Trail council member David Waddell turned in his petition to the State Board of Elections this week. He's a member of The Constitution Party of North Carolina and wants to run so people committed to conservative constitutional values have a choice on the ballot. He made headlines earlier this year when he submitted his letter of resignation from the Indian Trail Town Council in Klingon. Waddell said at the time he was resigning to focus on a Senate run.

Democrat Kay Hagan is seeking her second term in the Senate this fall. Republican Thom Tillis, who currently serves as speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives, and Libertarian Sean Haugh, a Durham pizza deliverer, are already on the ballot.

Senate write-in candidates must collect 500 valid voter signatures. Election officials say Waddell, Barry Gurney of Carteret County and former state Rep. John Rhodes of Mecklenburg County have exceeded that total, the AP reports.

The state board still must give final certification to their candidacies so votes they receive are counted.
