WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- David Irving's future with the Wilmington Hammerheads is clearly in doubt. It appears he may have coached his last game with the professional soccer squad.

Irving did not make the trip to California this week according to a source closely associated with the team. The Hammerheads are slated to play in Sacramento, CA, tonight. We understand Irving likely won't be coaching the Hammerheads when they return to town next week either.

Newly hired technical director Carson Porter and general manager Jason Arnold will be in charge of the team during the West Coast trip. Porter appears to be the choice to become the team's next head coach if Irving's move becomes permanent.

Irving has been the head coach of the Wilmington Hammerheads since 1999.

UPDATE: Sacramento defeated Wilmington 2-0 late Wednesday night. After the game Wilmington general manager Jason Arnold told WWAY, "Our team played very well tonight. Kept good possession and pressured Sacramento. They're a very good team and it's tough to play here in Sacramento. We will regroup and turn our focus to Saturday at Orange County."
